In the interests of context/full disclosure: I follow rahaeli as up until now I have found Denise to be a voice worth listening to about social media and tech stuff, especially as it intersects with fandom. I am not friends/mutuals with Stitch nor do I follow them; I may have interacted with them once in passing years ago if that. I have read some of their essays and blog posts and have found them insightful and worthwhile. I am also not one of the organisers of #EndOTWRacism; I do support their goals.

impertinence wrote a very good post a week ago titled whatever we owe each other that it also available as a tumblr post. It goes into what accountability in online communities can look like, what harassment looks like (ie just calling someone a bad name is not harassment) and the effects of Denise's actions.

When you ask people to believe that a person online is a serial harasser based on claims they haven't seen from people they don't know, you are not advancing the cause of internet safety. You are not advancing the cause of internet anti-racism. You are perpetuating a culture which makes judgements about the moral and ethical implication of people's behavior based on personality and connections rather than facts and the context for those facts. This worsens the problem; it creates space for malicious actors to thrive, because they don't have to stand up to ethical scrutiny from their peers. They just need to know the right people and say the right things.

And worded slightly differently, on Twitter: "I’m going to say this again because I know FFA got their feelings hurt about this: it is fundamentally wrong to try and advance a model of dealing with claims of harm in a community by relying on a game of telephone. "trust me bro" is not a workable model of community safety." _impertinence

twwings wrote an insightful thread that is publicly accessible via screenshot with permission here thanks to fiercynonym. A few standout quotes for me were these:

Critique is not censorship, though it is often "mistaken" for such when there is motive to ignore the critique. Most objections to EOR that I have seen amount to willful misreadings, and this is no different.

Citing Stitch, however much, whatever you think of Stitch, does not invalidate EOR in and of itself. If EOR is relying on something Stitch said that is untrue as a foundational part of their arguments, then we can talk about that, but I've seen no evidence for that.

If you were trying to act in solidarity with victims of harassment, the way to do it would not be by writing an offhand tweet in the middle of a long thread about CSEM mentioning that you don't agree with a movement the supposed harasser isn't even a part of

A lot of white people (and others) believe that critiquing structural racism is itself an attack on the space it's discussing. Worth thinking about: if you see any critique of racism within your space as an attack, how foundational must racism be to that space? ~ twwings

A few days ago rahaeli/ synecdochic /Denise posted a thread on Twitter about the OTW/AO3's failures on basic Trust and Safety, which they (I don't know what pronouns Denise uses and none are listed on their bios so I'm defaulting to they)are very qualified to speak on. The thread attracted a lot of attention and retweets, including by me. Towards the end of this very long, technical thread, which had been ongoing for a few hours by then and had already been retweeted heaps, they mention that they "appreciate the work of the EndOTWRacism campaign to raise awareness of the OTW's organizational dysfunction. I firmly disagree with the foundational work their campaign was built upon and many of the arguments they have made." Folks ask what they mean. About 12 hrs later Denise elaborates on this by continuing the same already VERY long thread, and says this "The campaign run by EndOTWRacism has made multiple extremely valid points that are undermined by the background information citing to the work of people who conflate actual racist harassment, the conduct, with "fiction that expresses racist beliefs", the content. By citing to that foundational material, the campaign is undermining its claim they are not calling for action against works "that accidentally invoke racist or other bigoted stereotypes" (thread continues).

This statement misrepresents what the End OTW Racism campaign is calling for. It also takes the bizarre position that if you cite material, you must agree with the entire body of work of the person you are citing. I mean be serious. Stitch is cited because she is one of the only people doing the work of chronicling racism in fandom. She has experienced extreme levels of harassment for it, which has been well-documented. Hardly anyone is doing this work because it is thankless, traumatising work.

I agree with originalmardia when she says "I have absolutely no idea why a thread about the OTW’s failings (which are NUMEROUS) needed to be derailed by swiping at the very campaign that made it possible to find out what was happening at the OTW." It seems such an unnecessary tangent in a VERY long, technical thread.

I'm feeling Not Great about this, and just trying to figure out what I want to do, given that Denise is the co-founder/owner of Dreamwidth. I have a paid account, and have for the past few years, and had up until this been happy to have DW as a place to hang out, even if I've been really struggling with posting/replying to comments on here. naye posted some of her thoughts a lot of which I really connected with, especially the part about how racism from the Landlord of Mars (to use alexandraerin's phrase) impacts me differently than racism from someone who is part of fandom, co-runs this site, and of whom I thought better.

pearwaldorf posted her take on what Denise is saying/doing, which I found a very worthwhile read and makes a lot of good points.

Anyway, today rahaeli/ synecdochic /Denise posted a new thread in which they sought to clarify their process. It's another really long thread and made me wonder whether the point might be to exhaust people with walls of text that sound 'reasonable' and basically amount to 'the lurkers support me in email' and 'trust me bro'.

Tanndell addressed this new thread of Denise's insightfully and allowed me to screenshot to share it publicly here: Let’s break down the insidious and dangerous nature of Rahaeli’s new thread, which targets stitch specifically and #endotwracism generically 🧵

I also want to link to Dr. RukminiPande pointing out that this is "yet another giant thread of vague accusations against Stitch with no proof so no way to disprove it... there is mountains of evidence of an extensive harassment campaign against Stitch by hundreds of ppl. But, what does this white person with power do? Decide to use all of that power to try and destroy Stitch for the crime of what? Of being cited by someone?"

There's more I could link to but this isn't intended to be an exhaustive roundup - just wanted to give my perspective on what's been happening. Disabling comments as I am pants at responding to DW comments and then that makes me anxious.

Call to action: End OTW Racism

It pisses me off no end that almost three years after the OTW committed to do better about racism in fandom, they have done sweet fuck all.

I was at the last OTW Public Board Meeting on March 27th and was left very much with the impression that the board wants the issue to go away, and intends to drag things out as long as they possibly can in the hope that it does. In fact they even did that during that board meeting, with Natalia Gruber taking seven minutes (out of an hour long meeting that was ended promptly) to reply to satsuma's question about the approximate timeline for hiring a diversity consultant; a question that they must reasonably have expected to be asked.

I'm going to quote Natalia's reply in full:

I'm afraid we aren't able at this time to provide an estimate for specific steps on the project. We understand that this project is as important to you as it is for us, and that asking for your patience is unfair when people have already been waiting for so long. Unfortunately, there are many aspects that make it hard for us to have detailed timelines for large projects in the OTW. For one thing, while we can occasionally rely on the work of contractors, the vast majority of OTW work is done by volunteers who need to balance their responsibilities to our organization with their own professional and personal responsibilities. Our volunteers are spread all over the world, and it can be difficult to have the necessary discussions to carry projects forward. We also want to make sure we fully consider every possible aspect of any changes we make, to make sure we're not causing unintended difficulties and problems for our users, volunteers, and organization.

That all means that we often need to change our plans as we go along, and be flexible with timelines. We also don't know at this time, once we managed to find a Consultant, how long they will need to get familiar with the OTW and its problems, whether they will be able to start working with us right away or need to finalize other contracts, and whether we'll managed to get our first option, or have to move through more than one company.

I was flabbergasted, and replied:

Thanks Natalia, I hear all of that, and I understand you can't give a deadline given the above. I am concerned that this work is being unnecessarily delayed. It is almost 3 years since the OTW comitted to doing better on racism in fandom. Almost 15 yrs since Racefail. Without even an indication of a hoped-for completion date this just seems like so many empty words.

Wanting fandom racism to be dealt with appropriately by the OTW isn’t purity nonsense, it isn’t being antis, it isn’t wank or fandom drama or shipwars.

This is racism being present in fandom, as it is present everywhere, because it is permitted to be present in fandom. That is a choice. I think we need to combat racism wherever we find it, and for me, one of those places is fandom.

I think generalfrings explains it well: The difference between 'regular' racism and fandom racism is that in fandom we allow + enact harm on black folks and folks of color by kicking them while shouting "WE ARE REVOLUTIONARY, INCLUSIVE AND PROGRESSIVE" instead of kicking them while saying slurs. ig it hurts less then!

I couldn't sleep the other night and ended up binging new cdrama Word of Honor, because GixiNinja and fandoestrans were enthusiastically posting about it. I started watching thinking that, like just about everything new I've tried to watch for over a year, I would bounce off of it. But I didn't, and I'm really enjoying it! 🥰

So of course now the worry is that the CCP censors will pull it for being too gay. Feeling a bit despondent about that but I figure the best thing to do is enjoy it while I can.

The first episode was quite full-on and dialled the intensity up to eleventy and there's a lot of very pretty cinematography and lots of Zhou Zishu looking gorgeous. I was close at certain points in the first episode to thinking it might not be for me, as there's body horror and torture and chronic pain, but it never quite hit my threshold, and eps 2, 3 and 4 were less full-on. I've set up and started adding things to Crowdsourced Content Notes for 山河令Word of Honor which will hopefully give people a bit of a heads up about at some things (with many thanks to naye for the template - here is her Crowdsourced Lost Tomb Reboot / The Sound of the Providence /盗墓笔记重启之极海听雷 Content Note Collection).

New Queer Historical Fiction: The Lion's Cub

My partner wrote a book!!! 🥳🎉✨

She's actually written several books, but this is the first one in the series and the one that's all polished and pretty and ready for the limelight. I seem to have been designated 'social media manager' because my attempts to lure her on to the birdapp have met with minimal success, and her idea of how to let people know she has a book out is basically that scene from Parks n Rec where Ron Swanson announces that there is art available but not to talk to him about it. She would say: "Here is a book. I wrote it. You can read it if you want. End of communication."

She's been writing the series since she was a teenager, because none of the books she read about Alexander the Great and Hephaistion seemed right to her (if you mention the 2004 movie she makes some quite interesting noises and then starts muttering crossly).

Basically, this is Alexandros' and Hephaistion's story that is about them as three-dimensional imperfect people, and is queer without being about teh gay angst. She's written it because the voices in her head told her to, and because she couldn't leave it alone. She's read a LOT about them, and made hissing noises at quite a few of the books she consulted for being either homophobic or Alexander apologists. She's spent hours figuring out whether a particular bit of armour would have been buckled or tied on.

This is the book (and series) I wish had been there when I first discovered Alexander the Great and was reading everything about him I could get my hands on. Among others I read Renault's Fire from Heaven and The Persian Boy and Gemmell's Lion of Macedon and Dark Prince. The story fascinated me, but every book seemed to either ignore Alexandros' relationship with Hephaistion, or dwell on it in ways that seemed voyeuristic and made me uncomfortable.

This book would not exist without 镇魂Guardian fandom and the many awesomely talented people therein, since neither of us had the first clue how to go about publishing.

elizabeth_fitz of Earl Grey Editing did the initial developmental edit which was super helpful and provided much needed perspective on the scope of the first book.

Haven't done one of these in ages but I have been wrangling with this chapter and realised it was Sunday 😈✨

This is a snippet from Like a bridge over troubled water, the fandomtrumpshate fic that I am writing for glymr

⚠️The fic as a whole is 🔞E rated, and is Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan/Ye Zun.

It's a canon AU that diverges after Zhao Yunlan travels to the past. At this point in the story Zhao Yunlan has been in his role as Kunlun for over a month before he returns to Alliance Headquarters and meets Shen Wei, and I think this bit stands reasonably on its own, and is rated G same as this scene on the show.

So I think this is a reasonable-ish first draft of what I want this vid to look like. This has been such a ~process for me because I have literally no idea what I'm doing, either with iMovie or with vidding. I'm just sort of going with gut feeling of what goes where, which is I suppose a similar process to when I write, only with writing I'm used to what that feels like.

This is very much still in draft form - as I will probably tinker with it a bit more but I need to work on a different project for a while to get some perspective on it back. Of course as soon as I uploaded I spotted a mistake where I hadn't cut precisely enough, at 1:14 🤦🏻‍♀️
