I am currently craving stories with powerful!Harry, set either during or postwar (but in either case with Harry as an adult), but not evil!Harry (though some darkness is fine, just not bleak hopeless dystopias). I am especially hoping to find stories where Harry takes in a broken Snape (or, at a pinch, Draco) and puts him back together.
Nickel Allergy and ASLAN leather

I recently bought this (link NSFW) leather cuff from ASLAN leather, and it gave me a horrid rash. It turns out that they use nickel plated metal fittings, which I would not expect of a quality manufacturer. They do not warn for this on their site. I emailed them about this, which turned out to the kickoff to disability!fail bingo. Their standpoint seems to be that it is entirely my fault for not having asked them specifically if their high quality leather products used low quality nickel plated metal parts. Also I apparently hurt their feelings. You can read my entire email exchange with ASLAN leather below:

( Fail and then more FAIL )

So basically, if you have a nickel allergy, don't expect ASLAN leather to care. Or even warn you that their stuff contains nickel. In her last email Carrie says that "we state that we use nickel plated findings". This is not correct - at least, it does not say so on the product page for the handy cuff and I couldn't find it anywhere else on their site.

I'm pretty much done talking to Carrie. I will, needless to say perhaps, not be buying her alternative cuff, nor anything else of ASLAN leather's.

comments

Backyard chickens :D

Keeping chickens in the back garden is made of awesome. We have had them for just over ten days. They are ex-battery hens, and watching them slowly discover how to be proper chickens is amazing. They've gone from being somewhat shellshocked birds that didn't even really know how to walk around properly to having dustbaths, scratching in the dirt, figuring out how to roost and how to walk up the ramp into the the henhouse. And they lay eggs at a rather astonishing rate, especially with all the changes in their lives and the fact that they're moulting. And they're such, well, dinosaurs, really. Only way to describe it, the way they look at you and the way they peck, and the studied way they walk. Also, fresh backyard eggs are delicious :)

I'm feeding them layer pellets, which is a non-medicated, non-growthhormoned complete food for laying hens, as well as a mix of grains formulated for chickens, the occasional kitchen scraps, and oyster grit on the side. They free range so they also eat grass, bugs, earthworms (now they have figured out what to do with them) and whatever else they find.

I can recommend backyard chicken keeping to anyone who has even the tiniest backyard, and 10 minutes a day to spend tending them. A word of warning though - you might find yourself spending hours watching your hens wander around the garden scratching and pecking, dustbathing, stretching their legs and fluffing their feathers etc. It's actually very soothing.

comments

Don't think I must have been in the mood for Andromeda this week. I pretty much lost interest after the first two episodes, and didn't finish the third episode. Dylan seemed overly naive somehow, and the plot seemed a bit trite, and clumsy, and, well, I wanted to like it more than I did. I might give it another go later on, because maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it, but. Also, there seems to be so very much badfic in this fandom it's scary, and not a whole lot of good or even tolerable fic, at least in what I've found so far. Yes, I did go looking for Dylan/Harper straight off the bat. I mean, Harper refers to Dylan as a Greek God. *g*

In other news, have been trying to read the first of the discworld novels, The Colour of Magic, which I got out from the library about a week ago, but haven't really gotten into it yet. It would appear to be delightful nonsense, but apparently I am no more in the mood for delightful nonsense that for Hercules in Space. But that's the great thing about libraries: you don't like a book, you just take it back and get another one out instead :)

comments

So far I like what I've seen. The stuff I've tried out feels logical and efficient, as if, *gasp*, someone has actually put thought into it and paid attention to detail. I love that I can import my LJ and my IJ. The content of the journals seems to have imported successfully, but not the comments. I am at present, however, too lazy to open a support request on that, and hope that it will magically disappear by the next time I try it.

I'm really actually rather thrilled to be here! Heh. It's... it's just plain neat! I imagine I shall be tinkering with it over the next few days, getting my tags sorted out, and running around randomly subscribing to people whose journals seem interesting. *g* Conflating two journals into one. I'm thinking of getting rid of the LJ altogether, if the comments and such transfer succesfully.

This has been making me think about when I got my LJ. holyschist gave me an invite code and showed me the ropes, and this time around, as it turns out, it's because of her that I'm on Dreamwidth, because she posted on how to get an invite code. So y'all can blame her ;)

Wheee, first Dreamwidth post!!! :D

comments
